Unfortunately the Borders Sunday League is not running this season as three teams withdrew at the last minute leaving just ourselves and Haverhill. So for this year matches will be a combination of friendlies and interclub games.
Our first match was a friendly against Haverhill. For eight of the team it was their first competitive match so an important moment in their cricket development. U11 teams start with 200 runs. Pairs of batters stay in for three overs, scoring runs as per normal but losing five runs for every dismissal. All players bowl at least one over.
Fielding first Weston started well with wickets for Charlie Jackson and Alex Kennedy. Gradually Haverhill recovered and although Kate Torrance picked up another wicket the last pair of Xander and Harry Silverwood (sons of England bowling coach Chris Silverwood) picked up 25 runs in their three overs to post 272 for the visitors.
In reply runs were hard to come by against some accurate bowling and good catching. Sam Vellacott and Henry Morris pushed the score along but a succession of wickets pulled the score back with Weston finishing on 203.
Participation is the key at this stage of a young players development and on the day the better team won. But everyone enjoyed the day and we now look forward to training for the return match.
